Can you share your personal story of working in the freight forwarding industry and how you see the future of the traditional freight forwarding business in the future?


My journey in the freight forwarding industry has been deeply intertwined with the legacy of Fanfani, a company that has been a stalwart in shipping since 1886. Starting as agents for cargo and passenger vessels in Livorno, we have evolved to expand our activities, operating between Mediterranean ports and the global market. This rich history has instilled in me a profound respect for the industry's traditions and a commitment to innovation.

Reflecting on my personal experiences, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of digitalization and technological advancements on freight forwarding. The future of traditional freight forwarding hinges on our ability to adapt to these changes, maintaining a personal touch as a family-run company. Embracing digital tools and platforms is essential to enhance efficiency, transparency, and customer satisfaction. At Fanfani, we are dedicated to integrating these innovations while preserving the personalized service that has been our hallmark for over a century.

 

What strategies have helped your company survive and maintain a competitive edge in the industry? 


Our longevity and resilience in the freight forwarding industry stem from our adaptability and unwavering focus on customer needs. Over the years, we’ve expanded our presence both domestically and internationally, building a robust network to meet the diverse demands of global trade. This strategic growth has allowed us to offer a wide range of solutions, from sea and air freight forwarding to customs clearance, port operations, and intermodal transportation.

What sets us apart is our dedication to providing tailored services that address the unique requirements of each client. By fostering close, trust-based relationships and anticipating our customers’ evolving needs, we’ve established ourselves as a reliable partner. If you can, share a recent example of the best-case situation that you are really proud of.


One of the projects we are particularly proud of involved the transport of an oversized cargo from Italy to Nigeria. This complex operation required the chartering of a vessel, with a dedicated part of the ship’s hold allocated for our client's exceptional load. The shipment's success was the result of meticulous planning, collaboration, and the expertise of our team.

What made this project stand out was our hands-on approach. Our personnel were physically present at both the loading in Italy and the discharge in Nigeria, overseeing every detail to ensure the cargo's safe handling and delivery. Managing such a challenging shipment, including navigating the logistical and regulatory complexities, showcased our ability to execute high-stakes operations with precision and care. It also reaffirmed our commitment to going the extra mile to deliver exceptional service to our clients.

 

Digitalization and technological advancements are changing the air forwarding industry. Can you share your attitude towards this trend and planned investments in technology to enhance your logistics operations?

How do you ensure that all shipments are compliant with customs laws and regulations?

Our dedicated customs clearance team stays abreast of the latest regulatory changes and maintains close relationships with customs authorities. This vigilance enables us to navigate the complexities of international trade effectively, minimizing delays and ensuring the smooth transit of goods.

Additionally, we guide our clients on necessary documentation and regulatory requirements, fostering a collaborative approach to compliance. By prioritizing transparency and adherence to legal standards, we uphold the integrity of our services and the trust our clients place in us.

 

What type of service have you included in your offering recently and why? Do you plan to introduce any new services in the near future?


Recently, we have expanded our focus on providing comprehensive and tailored logistics solutions to meet our clients' growing needs by buying another warehouse in Livorno, together with the ones we already have in the other cities. This includes strengthening our existing services to ensure greater flexibility and efficiency in managing diverse types of cargo.

Looking ahead, we are actively working on expanding our air and sea freight consolidation services in key target markets. By enhancing these offerings, we aim to provide more cost-effective and reliable solutions for our clients, especially in regions with growing demand for optimized transport options. This initiative reflects our strategic goal of expanding our presence in markets with high potential and aligning our services with emerging global trade trends.

 

In terms of multimodal collaboration, where does your company see areas of improvement or potential challenges that need to be addressed?

Rather than selecting partners based solely on benchmarking criteria, we prioritize building deep, long-term relationships with those who align with our values and commitment to quality. This approach allows us to maintain a high standard of service reliability and efficiency, which directly benefits our clients.
