Baltic Sea Stakeholders Advance Green Corridors and Decarbonisation

Representatives from ports industry and policy institutions across the Baltic Sea Region met in Hamburg on 23 April 2026 to discuss the future of sustainable transport and green corridors.
The workshop titled “From Ports to Green Corridors Energy Transition and Decarbonisation in Transport” took place at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort, underlining Hamburg’s role as a key hub for maritime sustainability and innovation.
Focus on Energy Transition and Regional Cooperation
Participants emphasized that long term regulatory stability is essential to support decarbonisation and energy transition efforts. Stronger regional cooperation was also identified as a key factor for sharing best practices coordinating investments and developing scalable solutions.
Sustainable port and logistics infrastructure were highlighted as critical elements for building a resilient Baltic Sea Region.

The workshop addressed both current operational challenges and long term transformation strategies across the maritime sector.
Key discussion areas included
• decarbonisation initiatives at the Port of Hamburg including onshore power supply and alternative fuels
• market development of emerging fuels such as methanol ammonia and hydrogen
• the role of rail and hinterland connections in sustainable logistics chains
• efficiency improvements through digital coordination and cross sector collaboration
• operational challenges faced by the shipping industry in reducing emissions
Strengthening Policy Dialogue and EU Cooperation
The event also included discussions with coordinators from the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region focusing on improving governance frameworks and project development.
Participants explored ways to better integrate regional priorities into EU level policymaking and to strengthen cooperation across sectors including energy transport and maritime safety.
Platform for Industry and Policy Alignment
The workshop brought together port authorities logistics providers energy companies and policymakers creating a platform for knowledge exchange and strategic alignment.
The programme concluded with a harbour tour organised by Port of Hamburg Marketing offering participants direct insight into port operations and ongoing sustainability initiatives.
