DB Cargo Automotive has strengthened its Automotive RailNet by introducing a new fleet of Laaeffrs 560.4 car carrier wagons, designed to meet the evolving transport requirements of the automotive industry. The first 60 wagons entered service in spring 2026 and are already being used across the company's multi-customer rail network throughout Europe.
The new 560.4 wagons are an upgraded version of DB Cargo's proven 560 wagon family and have been specifically developed to accommodate today's larger and heavier vehicles. Each wagon can transport vehicles weighing up to 3.2 tonnes, making them well suited for battery-electric vehicles, large SUVs, and vans. Adjustable loading decks and a flat wagon configuration provide greater flexibility, allowing operators to maximize loading capacity while safely handling taller vehicles.
According to Kai Birnstein, Head of Sales Automotive at DB Cargo Logistics, the automotive market is undergoing significant transformation as vehicle sizes and weights continue to increase. He noted that DB Cargo recognized these trends early and has consistently invested in flexible rolling stock capable of supporting manufacturers' changing production and distribution needs.
The project also marks an important milestone in DB Cargo's procurement strategy. The new wagons were supplied by CRRC, the world's largest rail vehicle manufacturer, following close cooperation between DB Cargo Automotive, the company's Assets & Maintenance division, and the manufacturer to achieve European certification. After arriving by sea at the Port of Brake in Germany, the wagons were unloaded, assembled, inspected, and placed into commercial operation.
Beyond increasing transport flexibility, the new wagons have been engineered with improved durability and easier maintenance, helping reduce lifecycle costs while increasing fleet availability. DB Cargo confirmed that additional 560.4 wagons will be delivered in the coming years as part of its ongoing fleet modernization program, reinforcing the company's commitment to providing efficient, sustainable, and future-ready rail logistics solutions for the European automotive industry.
