DB Cargo Hungária has launched a test program to evaluate a new double traction control solution in diesel operations, aiming to improve performance and flexibility in rail freight transport.
The system allows two diesel locomotives to be coupled and operated as a single unit through an electrical connection. Control commands are transmitted simultaneously to both locomotives, enabling synchronized operation. This setup allows one train driver to control both units at once, effectively doubling traction power while optimizing resource use.
The ongoing test phase focuses on assessing key operational factors such as control accuracy, power output, and overall driving behavior under real conditions. The goal is to validate the technical reliability of the system and secure final regulatory approval for regular use.
If successfully implemented, the solution could significantly enhance operational flexibility across DB Cargo Hungária’s fleet of diesel locomotives. It would enable new applications such as ultra-heavy shunting operations, specialized transport tasks, and the use of paired locomotives as powerful traction units. Additionally, the technology offers a practical alternative for mainline freight operations on non-electrified routes, strengthening resilience within rail logistics networks.
The company emphasized that the current testing phase is crucial for evaluating real-world performance and gathering data for future deployment. Insights gained from the trials are expected to support further development and potential wider adoption of double traction solutions in rail freight transport.
As part of the initiative, both locomotives involved in the trials have undergone significant upgrades, including full engine overhauls, gearbox improvements on one unit, and the installation of new cab air conditioning systems to enhance operational reliability and driver comfort.
Overall, the project highlights DB Cargo Hungária’s focus on innovation in rail freight operations, aiming to increase efficiency, capacity, and adaptability in increasingly complex logistics environments.
