Maersk Europe Market Update September 2026

Europe’s logistics networks are entering the autumn season under pressure from port congestion, weather disruptions and changing trade requirements, according to Maersk’s September market update.

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have announced that two Asia–Europe services, AE19 and AE15, will transit through the Suez Canal instead of sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. This is a limited change, however, and does not signal a full return of their East–West network to the Red Sea route. Further routing decisions will depend on the security situation.

At the same time, severe typhoons in East Asia have disrupted vessel schedules, with effects reaching European ports. Industrial action has affected connections through German terminals, while congestion continues at several North European and Mediterranean gateways. China’s Golden Week in early October may add further pressure to Asia–Europe planning.

Inland transport is facing challenges too: low water levels on the Rhine have reduced barge capacity in parts of Germany and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, importers should prepare for upcoming EU requirements affecting certain commodities and steel shipments.

For freight forwarders and their customers, the message is clear: book early, keep documentation accurate and maintain close communication with logistics partners. Flexibility will be especially important for time-sensitive and high-value cargo as the year-end peak approaches.
