Maersk North America Market Update – September 2026

North American supply chains are entering the peak season with strong demand, tighter capacity on several routes and changing trade requirements. In its September market update, Maersk advises businesses to plan shipments early and keep routing options flexible.

On the Transpacific trade, demand remains strong while typhoons in Asia have created shipment backlogs that may take several weeks to clear. Retail cargo and equipment for AI data centres are contributing to volumes. Space is also limited on routes from India, the Middle East and Africa into North America, where Maersk recommends booking well ahead.

Air freight is facing its own capacity pressures. Maersk reports growing demand for semiconductors, electronics and other time-sensitive technology cargo, particularly from selected Asian origins. Shippers may need to distinguish between urgent and less critical goods when choosing where to use premium air capacity.

Trade policy is another factor to watch. Maersk highlights changes affecting U.S.–Canada trade and advises importers to review product classifications and origin documentation. In the U.S., peak-season activity is also putting pressure on drayage and selected inland hubs, making reliable pickup planning important.

For freight forwarders and shippers, the practical priority is to share forecasts early, secure space in advance and prepare alternative routes. Close coordination across ocean, air, customs and inland transport will help keep cargo moving through the final quarter.
