Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Japanese classification society ClassNK have launched a joint research project to evaluate the effectiveness of Roll Damping Tanks (RDTs) on large container vessels.

The initiative aims to improve vessel stability, enhance cargo safety, and explore more efficient container loading operations.

How Does the Technology Work?

Roll Damping Tanks are designed to reduce a vessel's rolling motion caused by ocean waves. By using the controlled movement of liquid inside specially designed tanks, the technology helps stabilize ships during challenging sea conditions.

Potential benefits include:

  • Improved Cargo Safety: Reduced risk of container damage, cargo shifting, and excessive stress on securing systems.

  • Greater Vessel Stability: Less rolling motion during rough sea conditions.

  • Optimized Cargo Loading: Potential improvements in container stowage flexibility and vessel capacity utilization.

  • More Reliable Shipping Operations: Reduced operational risks associated with excessive vessel movement.

What Will the Research Focus On?

ONE will contribute operational data and shipping expertise, while ClassNK will provide technical evaluations and engineering analysis.

The project aims to determine how effectively Roll Damping Tanks can improve the performance of large container ships under real operating conditions.

Why Does This Matter for the Logistics Industry?

As container vessels continue to increase in size, maintaining stability and protecting cargo during ocean transportation remain major challenges.

If successful, the research could contribute to safer maritime operations, reduced cargo damage, and more efficient global container transportation.

The project represents another step toward technological innovation and improved safety standards in international shipping.
