PIONEERS Project Points to Greener European Ports
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is highlighting the results of PIONEERS, a European project focused on making ports more sustainable. Coordinated by the Belgian port, the project has tested practical solutions in areas including clean energy, port design, cargo-flow optimisation and digital technology.
Among the innovations trialled in real port environments are autonomous inland-waterway technology, renewable-energy systems and lower-emission cargo-handling equipment. The aim is to identify solutions that other European ports can adapt and scale, rather than treating each pilot as a standalone experiment.
PIONEERS is set to hold a joint closing session with its sister project MAGPIE on 17 September 2026. The event will turn attention from testing new technologies to applying the lessons across the wider port sector.
For logistics operators, the project shows that greener ports depend on more than equipment alone: energy supply, infrastructure and the movement of cargo all need to work together.
