DB Cargo Boosts Rail Freight Capacity by Up to 30% with Distributed Power System

DB Cargo is increasing rail freight capacity with its Distributed Power System (DPS), a technology that enables significantly heavier freight trains to operate with just one train driver. The system can increase the amount of freight transported per train by up to 30%, without requiring additional train journeys.

DPS connects locomotives positioned at the front and rear of a train through radio data transmission, allowing the rear locomotive to be remotely controlled from the leading locomotive. By distributing traction across the entire train, heavier loads can be transported while reducing stress on rolling stock.

The technology is already being used for voestalpine services between Linz, Austria, and Germany. On diversion routes affected by German rail corridor renovation works, conventional trains can carry around 2,400 tonnes, while trains equipped with DPS can transport more than 3,300 tonnes.

According to DB Cargo, the increased efficiency means that in some operations three trains can now transport the same freight volume that previously required four, improving capacity and reliability without additional infrastructure or staff. Following the positive results, DB Cargo is exploring the deployment of DPS on further routes and for additional customers.
