DHL Express Introduces AI Powered Item Identification for International Shipping

DHL Express has launched a new AI powered item identification feature designed to simplify international shipping and customs documentation. The company describes the solution as the first deployment of computer vision item identification integrated directly into a live customer facing international express booking process at scale.

The new technology uses advanced computer vision and artificial intelligence to analyze a customer generated photo of a shipment item and instantly create a structured, customs compliant item description. The feature is intended to simplify one of the most complex stages of cross border shipping, where customers are required to accurately describe shipment contents for customs clearance.

Customers can simply photograph the product they intend to ship using a smartphone or connected device. The AI system then processes the image through a server side computer vision model, classifies the object, and generates a customs compliant description within seconds. Before finalizing the shipment, customers can review, edit, or override the suggested description. DHL Express stated that no customer account is required to use the feature, making the process more accessible for occasional shippers and small businesses.

According to DHL Express, embedding AI directly into the booking process improves shipment data quality, reduces customs related delays, and increases the accuracy of international documentation. Cleaner shipment data at the point of entry is expected to reduce shipment holds and accelerate customs clearance processes across the logistics network.

Dirk Olufs, EVP and Global CIO at DHL Express, stated that accurate item classification creates better shipment data throughout the entire logistics process, resulting in fewer delays and a better customer experience. Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Solutions at DHL Express, added that the feature was developed directly in response to customer feedback regarding the complexity of shipment item descriptions during cross border shipping.

The launch highlights DHL Express’s broader strategy of increasing digitalization and automation within international logistics operations. The company has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and customs technology as part of its wider Strategy 2030 initiative focused on sustainable growth and smarter supply chains.

The AI powered item identification feature is currently available in eight markets including Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. DHL Express plans to continue expanding the service to additional markets throughout 2026.
