German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has signed three Letters of Intent (LOI) with the Government of India to deepen cooperation and support the development of the country’s maritime and logistics sector.
The agreements were signed in Mumbai during a meeting between CEO Rolf Habben Jansen and India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. The cooperation focuses on three key areas: ship reflagging, sustainable ship recycling, and the development of major port infrastructure.
One of the main elements of the agreement is the potential reflagging of up to four Hapag-Lloyd vessels under the Indian registry. While no timeline has been confirmed, the move reflects growing interest in strengthening India’s role in global shipping.
Another important pillar is the creation of a sustainable ship recycling ecosystem in India. The initiative aims to ensure that end-of-life vessels are dismantled safely and in line with strict environmental standards, particularly the EU Ship Recycling Regulation. The proposed system could eventually handle up to 100 vessels, supporting both sustainability and industrial growth.
The third key area is strategic cooperation on the development of Vadhavan Port, one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects. The port is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the country’s logistics network and improving its position in global trade. Hapag-Lloyd plans to contribute its expertise in shipping and terminal operations to support the project.
India is seen as a rapidly growing market in global trade, and Hapag-Lloyd aims to expand its presence in the region. The company already employs over 2,800 people in India, operates 17 offices, and runs multiple liner services connecting the country to major global trade routes.
The agreement highlights a broader trend of increasing investment in India’s port and logistics infrastructure. As the country continues to modernize and expand its maritime capabilities, partnerships like this are expected to play a key role in boosting global connectivity and supporting sustainable shipping practices.
