A major revolution in plans for a new port in Świnoujście. Work will begin in 2026, but the project has been thoroughly revised. The previous concept proved uneconomical. The current plan aims to bring Poland into the maritime “Champions League.” The entire investment burden has been taken over by the state.
Cape Pomerania – new port in Świnoujście
186 hectares of new Polish territory will rise on the Baltic Sea. Świnoujście is launching the most ambitious project in the 75-year history of Polish ports.
“For the Management Board of Sea Ports, this is a historic opportunity for the port to join the European port ‘Champions League,’” said Jarosław Siergiej, President of the Management Board of the Sea Ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście.
The so-called “Cape Pomerania” will be the first deep-water port in Western Pomerania, capable of handling 2 million containers per year.
“As part of Cape Pomerania, a container terminal will be built with a total quay length of over 1.3 km, allowing three vessels to be served simultaneously,” explained Krzysztof Sadowski, Vice President of the Management Board of the Sea Ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście.
This includes two vessels 400 meters long – the largest able to enter the Polish Baltic Sea.
“We treat Cape Pomerania and the new port in Świnoujście as a key and strategic investment, because ports today are part of our broadly understood security – not only economic, but also energy and military,” said Arkadiusz Marchewka, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure.
New concept and state budget financing
To make this possible, a new access channel to the port must be built.
“We will deepen 70 km of the waterway to a depth of 17 meters and a width of 500 meters so that ships can safely reach the new port,” said Wojciech Zdanowicz, Director of the Maritime Office in Szczecin.
The original port construction concept has been scrapped.
“Studies we commissioned from expert companies with high competence showed that the plan proposed by PiS politicians would not have paid off for the port in 158 years,” said Arkadiusz Marchewka, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure.
Therefore, the investment has been thoroughly revised, and cooperation with the previously selected foreign consortium was abandoned.
“The original plan did not match what is economically justified. As a result, all parameters previously included in the preliminary agreement have changed,” said Jarosław Siergiej, President of the Management Board of the Sea Ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście.
The entire investment burden now rests with the Management Board of Sea Ports.
Construction has already begun
Preparations for construction are underway. Technical roads will be built starting in early 2026, and the entire investment is expected to be completed by 2029.
