Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with APM Terminals to acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, strengthening its long-term presence at one of Europe’s most important container hubs.
The investment will be made through Hapag-Lloyd’s Terminals and Infrastructure division, Hanseatic Global Terminals. APM Terminals will retain operational control, while both companies will support the terminal’s continued development, capacity expansion and operational performance.
Maasvlakte II is a strategically important European hub for the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and A.P. Moller–Maersk. The transaction will provide Hapag-Lloyd with long-term access to automated terminal-handling capacity while supporting the efficiency and reliability of its shipping network.
Operational since 2015, the terminal is currently undergoing a major expansion. The project includes an additional 1,000 metres of deep-sea berth, increasing the total berth length to 2,000 metres, alongside expanded yard capacity, four additional rail tracks and new automated equipment.
The investment supports Hapag-Lloyd’s strategy of expanding its global terminal portfolio in key markets and reinforces the long-term role of Rotterdam within the Gemini network. Completion of the transaction remains subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
