HMM launches new West Africa service, accelerating global network expansion

HMM has announced the launch of its new Mediterranean–West Africa Service (MA2), set to commence in July 2026. The service represents a key step in the company’s hub-and-spoke strategy, aimed at expanding feeder networks from major logistics hubs and strengthening its competitive position in global shipping.
The MA2 service will utilize Algeciras in Spain as a central Mediterranean hub, connecting it with major ports across West Africa. This structure is designed to enhance logistical efficiency by linking regional feeder routes with HMM’s main east–west trade lanes while tapping into the high-growth potential of African markets.
The service will be operated in cooperation with Ocean Network Express (ONE), deploying five container vessels with a capacity of approximately 2,800 TEU each. The inaugural voyage is scheduled for the second week of July from Algeciras, with a full round-trip duration of 35 days.
The planned port rotation is as follows: Algeciras (Spain) – Tangier (Morocco) – Dakar (Senegal) – Tema (Ghana) – Lekki (Nigeria) – Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) – Algeciras (Spain).
According to an HMM official, the MA2 service will act as a strategic gateway, linking the company’s core main-haul routes with emerging African markets. The company aims to further strengthen its global network and deliver enhanced value to customers through this integrated logistics approach.
To support its expanding hub-and-spoke strategy, HMM has also significantly increased its feeder fleet capacity. Over the past six months, the company has secured a total of 24 feeder vessels, including newbuild orders and second-hand acquisitions ranging from 1,800 to 2,800 TEU.
The launch of the MA2 service highlights HMM’s ambition to deepen connectivity between Europe and Africa while positioning itself for growth in one of the world’s most promising emerging markets.
