Maersk Expands Into U.S. Battery Logistics Market with New Ground Freight Solution

Global logistics giant Maersk has announced the launch of a dedicated lithium-ion battery transportation service across North America, marking a significant expansion into the rapidly growing U.S. battery logistics sector, estimated to be worth between $2.4 billion and $3.0 billion annually.
The new service will operate through Maersk Ground Freight and is specifically designed to support the safe, compliant, and efficient transportation of Class 9 lithium-ion batteries. Demand for specialized battery logistics has surged alongside the rapid growth of electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, and advanced industrial production across North America.
According to Maersk, the initiative extends its existing dangerous goods expertise from ocean and air freight into domestic ground transportation, creating a more integrated logistics solution for battery manufacturers, automotive companies, and EV supply chain partners.
"The energy transition isn't just about what powers a vehicle — it's about the entire supply chain behind it," said Bob Livingston, U.S. Head of Maersk Ground Freight Operations. He emphasized that the safe movement of lithium batteries requires dedicated infrastructure capable of handling strict regulatory and safety requirements.
The move reflects Maersk’s broader strategy of strengthening its end-to-end logistics capabilities in North America. Over the past year, the company has continued investing in its U.S. ground freight network, warehousing, and inland logistics infrastructure to provide customers with more integrated supply chain solutions.
As governments and industries accelerate investments in electrification and renewable energy technologies, logistics providers are increasingly positioning themselves to support the transportation of batteries and other critical components. Maersk’s latest expansion places the company in a strategic position within one of the fastest-growing segments of the North American logistics market.
