Canadian battery developer NEO Battery Materials Ltd. has announced a strategic technology partnership with South Korea’s Zio Robot Co., Ltd., an AI logistics robotics company backed by Samsung Electronics. The collaboration will focus on integrating high-energy lithium-ion batteries into Zio’s “Mobile Worker” series of autonomous mobile robots designed for heavy-duty industrial logistics.
The partnership aims to improve energy density and high-rate discharge performance compared with the Chinese-manufactured batteries currently used in Zio’s robots. Expected benefits include increased payload capacity and longer operating times, helping Mobile Worker robots perform more efficiently in demanding warehouse and manufacturing environments.
Zio’s Mobile Worker platform is capable of transporting loads of up to 6,000 kilograms, placing significant demands on battery performance, cycle life, and reliability. Both companies plan to prototype and deploy optimized battery solutions with anchor collaborators, including Samsung Electronics, to validate performance in real industrial logistics operations.
Zio’s modular robotics architecture allows multiple robot units to connect and disconnect depending on operational needs. This flexible design supports deployment across warehouses, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities while reducing upfront costs and enabling customization for different industries.
Executives from both companies highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership. Zio CEO Tae Hun Kang said improved battery technology will help expand the robot’s payload capabilities and diversify battery sourcing beyond Chinese suppliers. NEO CEO Spencer Huh added that robotics face the same battery limitations as drones, where performance improvements directly increase runtime and efficiency.
The collaboration reflects growing demand for advanced, non-Chinese battery solutions in Western and allied robotics markets. By combining NEO’s silicon-enhanced battery technology with Zio’s AI logistics platforms, the companies aim to accelerate innovation in industrial automation and physical AI.
Why this partnership matters
• higher-performance batteries for heavy-duty logistics robots
• collaboration with Samsung Electronics for industrial validation
• diversification of global battery supply chains
• expansion of AI robotics in manufacturing, warehouses, and hospitals
