New rail connections for freight transport in Northern Italy

Italian logistics company FS Logistix, in partnership with Logtainer, has launched new intermodal rail services connecting key ports and inland logistics hubs in northern Italy.

The new services link the ports of Port of Genoa and Port of Vado Ligure with major inland terminals in Verona Quadrante Europa and Milan Segrate. The initiative is designed to transfer maritime cargo directly from ships onto trains, improving efficiency in freight transport.

By integrating sea and rail transport, the new connections strengthen the role of rail within intermodal logistics and support smoother cargo flows between ports and inland markets. Goods arriving at Ligurian ports can now be quickly transported to key distribution centers, from where they can reach destinations across Italy and Europe.

The cooperation between FS Logistix and Logtainer also marks a shift toward more integrated logistics management. Instead of treating transport stages separately, the companies are focusing on a coordinated approach from port terminals to inland hubs, improving overall supply chain efficiency.

These new services build on an intermodal strategy launched in 2025, aimed at expanding cross-border freight connections and offering more sustainable logistics solutions. Rail transport is expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing congestion and environmental impact compared to road transport.

The expansion highlights a broader trend in Europe toward integrating different transport modes into a single, efficient logistics network. By strengthening connections between ports and inland hubs, companies aim to create faster, more reliable, and more sustainable supply chains.
