project44 has introduced the AI Freight Procurement Agent, a new tool designed to automate carrier selection, rate benchmarking, and negotiations across different transport modes. Built for procurement and transportation leaders, the solution reduces manual sourcing work while improving cost control and service performance.

The agent is integrated into project44’s Intelligent Transportation Management System, replacing traditional bid cycles and spreadsheet-based negotiations with continuous AI-driven sourcing based on live market conditions and carrier performance. It works directly within transportation workflows, benchmarking contracted rates against market rates, evaluating carrier reliability by lane, and automatically selecting carriers. Shipment results are then used to improve future sourcing decisions.

By automating tasks such as rate benchmarking, mini-bids, and renewal negotiations within defined rules, the AI Freight Procurement Agent helps companies secure competitive rates faster while maintaining service quality. It can engage the market in seconds instead of hours, capturing savings that manual workflows often miss.

The system builds on project44’s Freight Procurement Analytics and operates on its large logistics data graph, which connects hundreds of thousands of carriers and billions of shipments worldwide. This allows sourcing decisions to reflect real-time market conditions and verified carrier performance instead of static historical data.

The agent is part of project44’s broader multi-agent orchestration approach, where multiple AI tools work together across the supply chain to automate processes and resolve issues. These agents operate within customer-defined rules and approval structures, ensuring transparency and control. Companies can start with recommendation-only mode and gradually increase automation as trust grows.

Early results show measurable benefits, including lower freight spending, shorter sourcing cycles, and reduced manual coordination. According to project44 CEO Jett McCandless, freight procurement is one of the largest controllable costs in supply chains, and AI-driven automation can deliver savings while keeping full operational control.

The AI Freight Procurement Agent will be available within project44’s Intelligent Transportation Management System starting in March 2026.
