In a first for Portugal, semi-trailers have been successfully transported by train, linking Spain with Entroncamento via Badajoz along the Eastern Line. This pioneering operation was made possible through a strategic collaboration between TRANSITALIA, TRAMESA, and MEDWAY, marking a significant milestone in their shared expansion and modernization strategy.
The initiative presented unique technical and operational challenges. Semi-trailers differ in dimensions and handling requirements from conventional container cargo, demanding meticulous planning. The journey also took place on a non-electrified line with a telephone block signaling system, lacking automatic speed control or radio communications between the train and ground teams — factors that underscore the operational sophistication of the project.
Carlos Vasconcelos, President of MEDWAY, highlighted the achievement:"The seamless coordination between Portuguese and Spanish teams, combined with rigorous planning and execution, was key to the success of this operation. This milestone reflects our strategic vision, technical expertise, and dedication, setting a benchmark for the future of rail freight in the region."
For freight forwarders, this development represents a major step forward in intermodal logistics. By enabling the rail transport of semi-trailers, MEDWAY and its partners are opening new, sustainable, and efficient routes across the Iberian Peninsula, reducing road congestion and carbon footprint while maintaining operational reliability.
With this initiative, MEDWAY reaffirms its leadership in Iberian rail freight, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and sustainable transport solutions that enhance competitiveness and logistical efficiency across the region.
