Sesé, Repsol, and Bosch have launched a six-month pilot project to measure and document the use of renewable fuels in road transport, enhancing the accuracy of their certification in combustion engine vehicles. The initiative aims to provide fully reliable carbon footprint measurements for vehicles operating on renewable fuels, thereby demonstrating that these fuels are a real, competitive, and immediate alternative for decarbonizing transport.

To achieve this measurement, the pilot project will leverage Bosch’s Digital Fuel Twin platform to trace the renewable fuel from its production at the first large-scale plant on the Iberian Peninsula—located in Cartagena—to its use in Sesé’s vehicles. This real-time data collection and analysis will make it possible to guarantee the renewable origin of the fuel used.

As part of the pilot project, Sesé will implement the platform in six of its vehicles, including duotrailers, thereby improving the accuracy of both the certification of the fuel’s 100% renewable origin and the measurement of emissions generated. In doing so, Sesé, as an integrated supply chain manager, continues to add value and support its customers’ decarbonization efforts by providing specific, detailed data on the emissions associated with the management and transport of their goods.

The fuel used in the project—100% renewable Nexa Diesel—is produced from organic waste and, thanks to current technology, enables a reduction of up to 90% in net CO₂ emissions compared to the fossil diesel it replaces. This is due to its lower carbon intensity, stemming from its organic origin. Nexa Diesel also features a unique formulation that enhances performance, extends engine life, and is compatible with all diesel engines. This type of renewable fuel is already available at over 1,200 service stations operated by the multi-energy company.

Héctor Cebrián, Head of Sustainability at Sesé, stated: “Renewable fuels are 100% compatible with existing infrastructure and combustion engine vehicles, enabling their rapid and cost-effective deployment across all types of transport. They can achieve up to a 90% reduction in CO₂ emissions. However, it is essential to have a traceability system—such as the one we are presenting today—to verify that vehicles are indeed using this type of fuel. This is crucial for achieving low-emission certification and ensuring that these vehicles are included within the same favourable legislative and fiscal frameworks as other decarbonization technologies.”

Estíbaliz Pombo, Repsol’s Energy Products Manager, stated: “This pilot project, developed in collaboration with Sesé and Bosch, represents a significant step forward in the traceability of renewable fuels. Traceability is essential for certifying the use of renewable fuels and for demonstrating their contribution to CO₂ emissions reduction.”

Initiative within the framework of the Tour d’Europe

This pilot project is part of the Tour d’Europe initiative, promoted by more than 20 companies, which aims to demonstrate that the decarbonization of land transport is already achievable through the use of renewable fuels in combustion engines.

Moreover, the key advantage of renewable fuels over other alternatives is that, while those alternatives require technological changes and/or new infrastructure, renewable fuels provide an effective way to reduce emissions today by leveraging existing fleets and infrastructure. They are as valid a solution as other technologies such as electrification or hydrogen.

Sesé is an integrated supply chain manager that designs and develops sustainable, innovative solutions that are efficient and adapted to the needs of its customers. The company, headquartered in Zaragoza (Spain), operates in 16 countries throughout Europe, America, Africa and Asia, with a team of more than 14,700 professionals for its various business divisions: land, air and sea transport; logistics and module assembly. Since 2013, Sesé has had the Sesé Foundation, whose main goal is to promote the employment integration of people with disabilities and those at risk of social exclusion.
