Teesside International Airport has secured a major air freight agreement with UK-based carrier European Cargo, marking a significant expansion of cargo operations at the airport. The partnership will introduce new long-haul cargo services between the United Kingdom and China, strengthening international trade connectivity for the North of England.
Under the agreement, European Cargo will establish a new operational base at Teesside and launch five weekly freight flights to China. The service is expected to transport up to 375 tonnes of cargo per week, providing additional export capacity for regional manufacturers and businesses.
The multi-million-pound deal will see the airline operate Airbus A340-600 freighter aircraft, each capable of carrying around 76 tonnes of cargo. The flights will create faster and more direct export routes to key Chinese trade hubs, improving access to global markets for companies across northern England.
Airport officials described the agreement as a major milestone in Teesside’s long-term growth strategy. The new cargo base is expected to strengthen the airport’s role as an emerging logistics hub while supporting job creation and attracting further commercial investment to the airport’s business park.
European Cargo stated that the decision to establish operations at Teesside is part of the airline’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the UK and enhance connectivity between Britain and major international trade centres.
The development also builds on a series of recent private-sector investments at the airport, including new aviation infrastructure and facilities designed to support long-term growth in air cargo and logistics operations.
