Fraport AG is advancing its sustainability agenda with the launch of the GREENVOLT project at Frankfurt Airport, a strategic initiative focused on reducing emissions and modernizing ground operations. Supported by the European Union, which is contributing €2.55 million out of a total €8.5 million investment, the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
At its core, GREENVOLT is designed to transform how energy is generated, stored, and used across the airport apron. A key component of the project is the expansion of ground power supply at nine remote aircraft parking positions. This will allow aircraft to switch off auxiliary power units under suitable conditions, significantly reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and noise during ground handling operations.
In parallel, Fraport is installing 322 electric vehicle charging points across the apron, enabling ground service providers and operational teams to transition more efficiently toward electric mobility. This infrastructure upgrade is complemented by the development of a battery storage system in the southern section of the airport, designed to store energy generated by a photovoltaic installation at Runway 18 West and redistribute it as needed.
Together, these measures form an integrated approach to energy management, combining renewable generation, storage, and consumption into a single operational framework. The result is not only a reduction in CO2, pollutant, and noise emissions, but also a scalable model for future airport infrastructure.
According to Fraport’s leadership, the GREENVOLT project represents more than an infrastructure upgrade. It is a step toward redefining how major aviation hubs operate in a low emission environment. By aligning operational efficiency with sustainability goals, the company is positioning Frankfurt Airport as a reference point for climate conscious airport management.
As part of its broader strategy, Fraport aims to achieve net zero emissions across its operations by 2045, with GREENVOLT playing a key role in enabling that transition.
