Air France KLM Cargo Expands Automated Perishable Handling at Paris CDG Airport

Air France KLM Martinair Cargo is strengthening its temperature-controlled logistics capabilities with a major expansion and automation project at its Perishables Centre at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG).
The project, developed in cooperation with German logistics technology specialist Lödige Industries, aims to improve cargo handling efficiency, increase storage capacity, and support growing demand for temperature-sensitive shipments, including pharmaceuticals and perishable goods.
Advanced Automation for Temperature-Sensitive Cargo
At the centre of the development is an automated Elevating Transfer Vehicle (ETV) system, designed to manage the storage and retrieval of air cargo containers (ULDs) and pallets across multiple levels.
The installation will feature 58 storage positions, including 17 within temperature-controlled areas, helping to maintain reliable cold-chain conditions while reducing manual handling and improving internal cargo movements.
Strengthening Cold-Chain Logistics
By introducing automated storage technology, Air France KLM Martinair Cargo expects to make better use of its existing infrastructure, accommodate increasing shipment volumes, and improve operational reliability.
The investment reflects the growing importance of automation in air freight, particularly for pharmaceutical products, fresh food, and other temperature-sensitive cargo requiring precise handling.
The new system is scheduled to become operational by the end of September 2027, further strengthening Paris CDG's position as a major European air cargo hub.
Through this investment, Air France KLM Martinair Cargo continues to modernize its logistics infrastructure and support more efficient, reliable, and scalable air freight operations.
