DP World has taken another significant step towards sustainable port operations by deploying 55 electric yard tractors at its Busan terminal in South Korea, replacing existing LNG-powered vehicles and reducing the environmental impact of container handling activities.

The newly introduced electric yard tractors represent approximately 36% of the terminal's total fleet of 154 vehicles. Designed to transport containers within the terminal, each electric tractor is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 70% compared with the LNG-powered equipment it replaces.

Improving Efficiency and Environmental Performance

Beyond reducing carbon emissions, the transition to electric equipment is expected to deliver several operational advantages, including quieter operations, smoother acceleration, and improved performance during frequent stop-and-go movements.

Electric tractors also contain fewer moving parts than conventional LNG-powered vehicles, potentially reducing maintenance requirements and improving equipment availability.

The transition will additionally reduce the use and disposal of engine fluids, minimizing the risk of leaks and further limiting the environmental impact of terminal operations.

Supporting South Korea's Green Logistics Ambitions

As a participant in South Korea's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), DP World Busan continues to implement measures aimed at reducing operational emissions and supporting the country's transition towards low-carbon logistics.

The deployment forms part of DP World's broader global sustainability strategy, which includes similar electrification initiatives at the Port of Brisbane in Australia, Manila South Harbour in the Philippines, and Laem Chabang International Terminal in Thailand.

Looking Ahead

DP World plans to continue expanding the use of electric equipment at its Busan terminal as part of its long-term efforts to decarbonize port operations.

The investment demonstrates how electrification can contribute to more sustainable and efficient container terminal operations while maintaining reliable logistics services.
