The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported a strong performance for the global air cargo market in May 2026, with total demand increasing by 6.0% year-on-year, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTK). International cargo demand grew even faster, rising 6.5%, while global cargo capacity increased by 1.9%, reflecting continued strength in the air freight sector.
Regional performance remained positive across most markets. Africa recorded the highest growth with a 13.3% increase in demand, followed by North America (+10.5%), Asia-Pacific (+8.0%), and Europe (+6.7%). The only region to experience a decline was the Middle East, where demand fell 8.9% due to ongoing geopolitical disruptions affecting trade routes and air cargo operations.
According to IATA, the latest figures demonstrate the resilience of global air freight despite geopolitical uncertainty and evolving trade patterns. While demand continues to grow, airlines are closely monitoring operational costs, fuel prices, and supply chain developments that could influence market performance in the coming months.
The association noted that strong manufacturing activity and continued international trade have supported cargo volumes, reinforcing the essential role of air freight in maintaining global supply chains and facilitating international commerce.
