Hapag-Lloyd is continuing to expand its footprint in West Africa with the opening of a new office in Cotonou, Benin. The office, scheduled to open on May 20, represents another step in the company’s long term growth strategy across the African market and will allow Hapag-Lloyd to serve customers in Benin through a dedicated local presence.
Benin is becoming an increasingly important market within West Africa, supported by stable economic growth and continuous investments in infrastructure and trade facilitation. The country’s strategic position and improving logistics capabilities are strengthening its role within regional and international trade networks.
A major factor behind Benin’s growing importance is the Port of Cotonou, which serves as a critical gateway not only for Benin itself but also for neighbouring landlocked countries such as Niger and Burkina Faso. This makes the country an important logistics and transit hub for West Africa.
Hapag-Lloyd has already been serving customers in Benin through its wider regional network, with Cotonou playing an important role in connecting West Africa to global trade lanes. The establishment of a dedicated office is expected to improve responsiveness, strengthen customer relationships, and provide solutions tailored more closely to local market requirements.
According to Jesper Kanstrup, Managing Director Sub Region Africa at Hapag-Lloyd, the expansion aligns with the company’s broader Strategy 2030 ambitions. He stated that the new office will help the company move closer to customers and partners while supporting the continued growth of trade in the region.
The new office also highlights Hapag-Lloyd’s long term commitment to strengthening logistics and shipping infrastructure across Africa. As trade volumes in West Africa continue to grow, shipping companies are increasingly investing in regional operations to improve efficiency, reliability, and customer service.
Through its expansion in Benin, Hapag-Lloyd aims to reinforce its position within the West African market while continuing to provide reliable and efficient shipping solutions for customers throughout the region.
