India reached a major milestone in its maritime and manufacturing sectors as A.P. Moller–Maersk unveiled its first export-import (EXIM) shipping container manufactured in India. The container was officially launched by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal at the Maersk–CONCOR Inland Container Depot in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh. The achievement marks the first time an international shipping company has procured India-made shipping containers for global operations and highlights the country's growing role in international logistics and manufacturing.

A Major Step Toward Maritime Self-Reliance

The launch represents an important step in India's strategy to reduce its dependence on imported shipping containers and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities. The initiative supports the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) vision while reinforcing India's ambition to become a global manufacturing and logistics hub.

The project also demonstrates the success of cooperation between government and industry. Within just sixteen months of discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla in February 2025, India successfully produced its first internationally procured EXIM container meeting global quality standards.

Maersk Places Order for 1,000 Additional Containers

To reinforce its confidence in India's emerging manufacturing ecosystem, Maersk announced an order for 1,000 additional India-manufactured shipping containers from DCM Shriram Group during the unveiling ceremony.

The order marks the beginning of a long-term commercial partnership and demonstrates Maersk's commitment to diversifying its global sourcing strategy while supporting local manufacturing capabilities. It also provides a strong endorsement of India's ability to produce containers that meet international quality and safety requirements.

Built to International Standards

The newly manufactured containers comply with internationally recognized standards, including ISO specifications and the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC). This certification ensures that the containers can be safely deployed across Maersk's global shipping network without compromising operational performance or safety.

Producing containers locally while maintaining international standards strengthens both supply chain resilience and manufacturing competitiveness.

Supporting India's Maritime Manufacturing Ecosystem

The project aligns with India's broader industrial strategy, including the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS) announced in the 2026 Union Budget. The program aims to significantly increase domestic container production capacity, reduce reliance on imports, and develop a globally competitive maritime manufacturing industry.

Expanding local container production is expected to:

  • Reduce dependence on foreign manufacturers.

  • Improve supply chain resilience during global disruptions.

  • Create new manufacturing and skilled employment opportunities.

  • Strengthen India's position in the global maritime value chain.

These developments contribute to building a more resilient logistics infrastructure capable of supporting India's growing international trade.

Strategic Benefits for Maersk

For Maersk, sourcing containers from India offers several strategic advantages. Diversifying manufacturing locations reduces supply chain risks, shortens procurement lead times, and creates greater flexibility in responding to changing market conditions.

The partnership also supports Maersk's broader strategy of developing integrated and resilient global supply chains by working closely with regional manufacturing partners while maintaining high operational standards.

Looking Ahead

The unveiling of the first India-manufactured EXIM shipping container represents more than a single industrial achievement. It signals the beginning of a deeper collaboration between Maersk and India's manufacturing sector, creating opportunities for future investment, technology transfer, and expansion of domestic production capacity.

As global supply chains continue to evolve, initiatives like this help build greater resilience while positioning India as an increasingly important player in global maritime logistics. The partnership demonstrates how collaboration between government, manufacturers, and international logistics companies can create long-term value for global trade and supply chain stability.
