The Lithuanian government has approved the special plan for the Kaunas–Vilnius section of the Rail Baltica project, marking a key milestone in the country’s transport and logistics development. The decision also enables the start of land acquisition procedures in the Kaunas and Jonava districts, paving the way for future construction.

The Kaunas–Vilnius connection is planned as a later phase of the broader Rail Baltica corridor, which will link Poland with Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia through a modern European standard-gauge railway. The project is designed to integrate the Baltic States into the wider European rail network and support both passenger and freight transport across the region.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity and Logistics

The new section will connect the key transport nodes of Kaunas and Vilnius, significantly improving domestic and international connectivity. The planned route will include links to major logistics assets such as Vilnius Airport, Kaunas Airport, and the Vilnius Intermodal Terminal, creating stronger multimodal transport options for freight operators.

Rail Baltica is expected to shift a significant share of cargo from road to rail, improving efficiency and sustainability while reducing congestion and emissions.

For logistics providers, the Kaunas–Vilnius section is particularly important as it connects Lithuania’s capital directly to the main north–south freight corridor, enabling smoother cargo flows between Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.

Infrastructure Development and Technical Scope

The planned railway will pass through key locations including Paneriai, Lentvaris, Vievis, Žasliai, and Kaišiadorys, with additional regional connections and integration into existing rail infrastructure. The project includes the construction of standard-gauge tracks, intermodal facilities, and improved access roads.

Extensive preparatory work has already been completed, including engineering, geological, and environmental assessments. Multiple route alternatives were evaluated to ensure optimal integration with urban areas and existing infrastructure.

Due to its proximity to cities and residential zones, the Kaunas–Vilnius section is considered technically complex. However, its completion will significantly enhance infrastructure capacity and operational efficiency.

Strategic Importance for Europe

Rail Baltica is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region and plays a crucial role in strengthening both economic connectivity and strategic mobility across Europe. The corridor is designed to support not only commercial logistics but also military mobility, reflecting its importance in the current geopolitical environment.

The project is being developed in phases, with priority currently placed on completing the main north–south line by 2030. Funding for the Kaunas–Vilnius extension is expected to come from future European Union financial frameworks.

Faster Transport and Future Impact

Once completed, the Kaunas–Vilnius section will reduce travel time between the two cities to approximately 38 minutes, significantly improving transport efficiency.

For the logistics sector, the benefits go beyond speed. The project will:

  • enhance intermodal connectivity

  • increase rail freight capacity

  • strengthen trade corridors between Europe and the Baltic region

  • improve supply chain resilience

Conclusion

The approval of the Kaunas–Vilnius section represents a major step forward in the development of Rail Baltica and the modernization of Lithuania’s transport infrastructure.

For freight forwarders and logistics companies, the project offers long-term strategic value by improving connectivity, expanding rail freight options, and reinforcing the Baltic region’s role in European supply chains.
