PSA Zeebrugge has taken a major step toward sustainability by installing nearly 1,900 solar panels at its terminal in Belgium. Unlike traditional rooftop systems, the panels are mounted vertically on the facades of warehouse buildings, making the project one of the largest vertical solar installations in the country.
The system has an annual capacity of approximately 770 megawatt-hours (MWh), which is enough to cover about half of the terminal’s electricity consumption. In addition, it is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 100 tons of CO₂ per year, equivalent to the emissions of around 220 households.
The project was developed in collaboration with Insaver, part of the Luminus Group, and was officially inaugurated by the Mayor of Bruges, Dirk De fauw. The installation demonstrates how innovative solutions can help companies meet climate targets even when traditional options, such as rooftop panels, are not feasible due to structural limitations.
According to PSA Zeebrugge, the decision to use vertical solar panels was driven by the inability of the warehouse roofs to support standard solar systems. Despite this challenge, the company implemented a creative and efficient solution that aligns with its sustainability goals.
The project also supports broader environmental targets. PSA aims to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels and achieve net zero emissions from its operations by 2050. The installation helps meet regional regulatory requirements, as companies in Flanders with high electricity consumption must generate part of their energy from solar sources.
In addition to reducing emissions, the initiative contributes to the wider energy transition in Belgium. Luminus, one of the country’s leading energy companies, sees the project as part of its “Electrify2030” program, which focuses on reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing energy independence through electrification.
Looking ahead, PSA Zeebrugge is exploring further opportunities to source 100% of its electricity from locally produced renewable energy. The project highlights how ports and logistics companies are increasingly adopting innovative technologies to improve sustainability while maintaining operational efficiency.
