Schiphol and KLM Sign Landmark Agreement to Support Airport Expansion

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and KLM have signed a major agreement that will enable the next phase of Schiphol’s long-term redevelopment strategy. The deal includes the relocation of several KLM facilities, creating space for new passenger infrastructure, future aircraft operations, and a modernized cargo hub.
Under the agreement, KLM’s cargo operations will move from Schiphol Centre to a newly developed cargo area on the opposite side of the Kaagbaan runway, while KLM Catering Services and other operational facilities will relocate to Schiphol North. These moves are a key component of the Schiphol Centre Master Plan, which outlines the airport’s development over the next 25 years.
The relocation will free up valuable space within the airport’s central area, allowing Schiphol to build the planned Terminal South and create additional aircraft stands capable of accommodating larger next-generation aircraft. The expansion is intended to improve passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and overall airport accessibility as traveler numbers continue to grow.
The agreement also supports Schiphol’s sustainability ambitions. New facilities will be developed according to modern environmental standards, contributing to the airport’s goal of reducing emissions from airport and ground operations by 90% by 2030 compared with 2019 levels.
For the cargo sector, the project will lead to the creation of a modern and centrally organized logistics area known as “Vracht 15” in Schiphol South-East. The new cargo hub is expected to improve efficiency, accessibility, working conditions, and sustainability while strengthening the Netherlands’ position as a key air cargo gateway.
Following the signing of the agreement, Schiphol and KLM will begin the design and planning phase for the new facilities. Architectural tenders are already underway, and several development projects will commence to facilitate the relocation and transformation of the airport.
The agreement represents one of the most significant infrastructure partnerships between Schiphol and KLM in recent years, laying the foundation for a more modern, sustainable, and passenger-focused airport while supporting the future growth of both aviation and cargo operations in the Netherlands.
