Frankfurt Air Cargo Volumes Hit by Middle East Conflict and Strikes

Frankfurt Airport recorded a decline in cargo volumes during June 2026, as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and industrial strikes disrupted global air freight operations. According to airport operator Fraport, cargo throughput fell to 174,262 tonnes, representing a 2.3% decrease compared with June 2025. The decline highlights how external events continue to affect one of Europe's busiest air cargo hubs.

Middle East Conflict Disrupts Air Freight

The conflict in the Middle East forced airlines to avoid restricted airspace, resulting in longer flight routes, increased fuel consumption and reduced cargo capacity. These operational challenges affected cargo flows between Europe, Asia and the Middle East, contributing to lower freight volumes at Frankfurt Airport.

Strikes Add Further Pressure

In addition to geopolitical disruptions, strikes at Frankfurt Airport and across parts of Europe placed further pressure on cargo handling operations. Temporary operational constraints slowed cargo processing and reduced overall throughput during the month.

Long Term Growth Remains Positive

Despite the weaker June performance, Frankfurt Airport continues to show resilience over the longer term. Demand for air freight remains supported by e commerce, high value manufacturing and global trade, although ongoing geopolitical uncertainty continues to challenge the industry. Airport operators expect market conditions to improve as supply chains stabilize and operational disruptions ease.
