International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on the Ethiopian government to continue prioritizing aviation investment, as passenger demand in the country is expected to triple over the next 20 years.

The growth outlook highlights aviation’s increasing importance for Ethiopia’s long-term economic development, with further investment needed in infrastructure, workforce development, and sustainability.

Aviation Driving Economic Growth

According to IATA data, aviation already plays a key role in Ethiopia’s economy, supporting:

  • USD 2 billion in economic activity (1.2% of GDP)

  • 527,000 jobs across aviation, supply chains, and tourism

  • 248,400 tonnes of air cargo, strengthening trade and connectivity

The sector is expected to expand further, driven by strong demographic growth and increasing demand for air travel.

Key Priorities for Future Growth

IATA has outlined three critical areas to sustain growth and maximize aviation’s economic impact

Infrastructure Development

As Ethiopia develops the new Bishoftu airport, a strong focus on cost efficient infrastructure and coordination with airlines will be essential to meet growing passenger and cargo demand.

Training and Workforce Development

Continued investment in aviation education through institutions such as Ethiopian Aviation University will ensure a skilled workforce including pilots engineers and ground staff.

Sustainability

Sustainability will play a key role in long term growth. Ethiopia has the opportunity to participate in global carbon markets under CORSIA and align with the aviation industry goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

Strengthening Africa’s Aviation Sector

The topic is being discussed at the ongoing IATA Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa where industry leaders and government representatives are working on concrete steps to strengthen aviation across the continent.

According to Kamil Alawadhi aviation already plays a central role in Ethiopia’s economic growth and has strong potential for further expansion.

Summary

With passenger demand expected to triple by 2044 Ethiopia’s aviation sector is entering a period of significant growth. Continued investment in infrastructure workforce and sustainability will be essential to support long term development and global connectivity.
