A new intermodal rail freight service has been launched connecting Serbia with one of Germany’s most important logistics regions. DP World has begun handling cargo on a regular rail service linking its terminal in Novi Sad, Serbia, with Herne in western Germany, located in the Rhine-Ruhr logistics hub.

The service, operated by Austrian transport company LKW Walter, runs three times per week, with a transit time of approximately 45 hours, making it faster than many long-haul trucking routes between Southeast and Western Europe.

In addition to improving transit times, the intermodal connection significantly reduces environmental impact. By shifting the long-haul segment from road to rail, carbon emissions can be reduced by up to 80% compared with traditional trucking operations.

The terminal in Novi Sad has become the first in Serbia to offer a regular intermodal rail connection to Western Europe, strengthening the country’s position within European supply chains.

According to DP World Novi Sad general manager Gokhan Yurteken, the new route provides customers with a faster and more predictable connection between Serbia and Western Europe while reducing reliance on complex cross-border trucking operations.

The service also responds to growing regulatory pressures affecting long-haul road transport in the European Union. These include new border control systems and stricter driver mobility rules that can make cross-border trucking slower and more complex.

Intermodal transport combines rail for the long-distance segment with trucks for first- and last-mile delivery, helping improve efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and dependence on drivers.
