The Port of Algeciras has reinforced its cooperation with Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan following a recent visit by a Chinese delegation led by Zhejiang Seaport Group.

The meeting highlighted the strong strategic relationship between the two ports. Ningbo Zhoushan is one of Algeciras’ key trading partners and serves as an important origin point on the Maritime Silk Road, a major trade route connecting Asia and Europe.

Located on China’s east coast, Ningbo Zhoushan is the world’s busiest port by cargo volume, handling around 1.4 billion tonnes of cargo and approximately 44 million TEU annually. Together with Algeciras, it supports one of the fastest maritime connections between China and Spain.

Shipping between the two regions is highly efficient, with transit times for exports from China to Spain averaging about 31 days. The Port of Algeciras is connected to China through four main shipping services linking six Chinese ports, further strengthening trade flows between the regions.

The Chinese delegation was led by Zhu Miao, Director General of Zhejiang Seaport Group, while the Spanish side was represented by Gerardo Landaluce, President of the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay. Both sides emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in logistics, trade, and port operations.

Officials stated that the visit will help expand collaboration in cargo flows and logistics services, while reinforcing Algeciras’ role as a key European gateway on Asia–Europe maritime routes.

The partnership is also closely linked to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, also known as the New Silk Road. This strategy aims to improve access for Chinese goods to European markets by strengthening transport infrastructure, investing in ports, and building international cooperation along major trade corridors.

As global trade continues to grow, stronger cooperation between major ports like Algeciras and Ningbo Zhoushan is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring efficient, reliable, and faster connections between Asia and Europe.
