MSC Air Cargo has officially launched its first dedicated air cargo route to mainland China, marking a significant milestone in its global network expansion.
In the early hours of March 4, flight CP251 landed at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, where it was welcomed with a ceremonial water arch, symbolizing one of the highest honors in civil aviation. The aircraft departed again at 5:29 am for Milan Malpensa Airport, creating a direct link between Asia and Europe and strengthening trade connectivity between the two regions.
The new service will operate twice weekly using Boeing 777 freighters, focusing on the transport of high value and time sensitive cargo such as pharmaceuticals, cold chain products, and fresh produce. The route is expected to support exports from Shanghai and the wider Yangtze River Delta while improving the efficiency of international supply chains.
The launch follows a strategic cooperation agreement signed in November 2025 between Shanghai Airport Authority and MSC Air Cargo. The partnership is aimed at leveraging global network capabilities and multimodal transport, while advancing digital cargo solutions, supply chain upgrades, and sustainable logistics practices. Shanghai Pudong Airport will serve as MSC Air Cargo’s strategic gateway in the Asia Pacific region.
Shanghai Pudong continues to strengthen its position as a leading international logistics hub. The airport is expanding its cargo network to 63 destinations in 31 countries and is targeting an annual cargo throughput of 4.5 million tonnes, highlighting its growing role in global trade.
Overall, the new Shanghai Milan connection represents an important step in enhancing China Europe air cargo connectivity and supporting the development of faster, more resilient global supply chains.
